The Elsmere Fire Company was formed on March 21, 1921 after a field fire earlier that month had threatened several homes and the response time for Wilmington's volunteer fire companies was more than one half hour. At the time of the fire company's formation, the town consisted of a large fiber company, a bedspring manufacturer, and the Wilmington Wheel Co. The town was also home to the Delaware State Fairgrounds in the area which is now Elsmere Manor. |
