ELSMERE -- Five people were injured, including a 5-year-old boy, when a car slammed into a vehicle
parked outside an Elsmere barbershop and pushed it through the wall of the building Saturday morning.
The force from the vehicle crashing through the brick wall of Mark's Barber Shop, 1119 Kirkwood Highway,
was so strong it "catapulted" the boy, who was sitting in the waiting room, across the shop, Elsmere fire

On Saturday 1/5/08, the Elsmere Fire Co. assisted Station 17(Five Points) on a working structure fire
at 561 Homestead Rd. in Alban Park. Engine 165 and Ladder 16 responded. A total of eight
firefighters were injured battling this fire which heavily damaged the basement and the first and
second floor apartments. Seven firefighters, including four from Elsmere were treated and released
from the Christiana Hospital. One Elsmere firefighter refused treatment. Injuries sustained included
first and second degree burns and a fractured wrist. The cause of the fire is under investigation by
the State Fire Marshal's Office.
On Thursday morning 1/3/08 at 0351 hours, Station 16, 17, and 14 along with Sta. 2&21 for the RIT were
alerted for a house fire at 145 Olga Rd. Vilone Village. Shortly after the initial dispatch, the alarm was
upgraded by Fire Board to a Working Alarm. Eng. Capt. Mark Facciolo arrived shortly after dispatch and
reported heavy fire showing. Several area companies including Elsmere with Engine 16-5 were still
committed to a previous Working Alarm in Alban Park in Station 17's District. While enroute ot the Olga Rd.
fire, 16-8, Chief Godek, requested Fire Board to dispatch WFD Engine 6 and Tower 2 due to the
commitment of resources at Alban Park. Upon 16-8's arrival he found a 2 story single family residence
heavily involved. Fire had extended to the attached garage at 145 Olga Rd., as well as the two story single
family home and detached garage at 143 Olga Rd(Exposure D). Rescue 16 was the first unit onscene with a
sh ort crew and was assigned to attack the fire on the exterior of Exposure D. 14-5 established a water
supply and the crew initiated an interior attack through the front door of 145 Olga Road. The crew from 21-6
was re-assigned from RIT to suppression and took a back up line to assist 14-5. The crew from
11-5(cover-up from Sta. 17) was split to asssist R16's crew and to investigate the interior of Exposure D.
There was no extension to the interior of Exposure D. 16-5 responded from Alban Park and established a
water supply source for R16. Ladder 16 was positioned at the front of 145 Olga Road. Due to worsening
conditions, 16-8 ordered the structure evacuated and an exterior attack was initiated including the use of the
aerial master stream from L16. Firefighters later re-entered the structure to extinguish hot spots and perform
overhaul. Firefighters from Stations 22, 23, 19, and WFD also assisted. The wind and temperatures in the
mid-teens created very hazardous and challe nging conditions for personnel operating at the scene.
Fortunately no one was injured. Two cats died in the fire. 145 Olga Rd. was destroyed and the residence at
143 sustained heavy exterior damage to it's B side as well as damage to the detached garage.
