
On Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 1034 hours, Stations 14 and 16, along with Medic 7 and Trooper 4 were
dispatched for an MVC w/entrapment and vehicle on fire on DE Rt. 141 south of Lancaster Pike. Chief Dennis
Godek(16-8) arrived at 1036 hours and reported a crash between a pick-up truck and passenger vehicle. There
was no fire upon arrival. An elderly female was trapped in the passenger vehicle which was in the median between
the n/b and s/b lanes. The pick-up truck had left the east side of the n/b lanes after the crash and came to rest in a
wooded area. 16-8 established Centre Rd. Command. A-14 arrived and was assigned to the female patient in the
passenger vehicle. A-16 arrived and was assigned to the male patient in the pick-up truck who had suffered an
open fracture of the ankle area of the left leg and other injuries. Upon arrival of Medic 7, the crew split with one
Medic treating each of the two patients. Rescue 14 arrived and the crew began extrication of the elderly female who
was suffering from an open femur fracture of the right leg, possible left hip fracture, chest, and head injuries.
Command requested a second Rescue for additional personnel and Rescue 17 responded. Upon their arrival,
Rescue 17's crew assisted with packaging bot patients. Extrication required the removal of three doors, a roof
removal, and dash displacement. Extrication of the female was complete at 1121 hours. Trooper 4 transported the
female, as a Trauma Code, to CER. Units cleared the scene at 1200 hours.


On Saturday 1/10/09 @ 01:30 Hrs the Friday Night Duty Crew was alerted along with Station 14 (Cranston Heights) to an
MVC reported with entrapment and 2 subjects not alert, at Lancaster Pk (Rt.48) and Hercules Rd. With a staffing level of
9, both Rescue 16 commanded by Asst. Chief: Moore and Engine 165 commanded by Engine Captain: M. Facciolo made
the response. While FD units were en-route, ALS 23 went on scene and reported 1 DOA and 1 trapped. Upon arrival of
Rescue 16, crew was directed by Command (G. Lamborn 14-8) to start extrication of the driver of the second vehicle. 2
FF's of Engine 165 stretched a 2” handline for precautions, with the other 2 FF's being tasked with removing the passenger
side door of the second vehicle. Rescue 14 arrived and assisted with extrication. The victim was freed in about 20 minutes
and transported to the CER in critical condition. Comma nd then placed the situation under control, and released Engine 165
and held Rescue 16 and Rescue 14 for extrication of the driver of the first vehicle (DOA) after the Delaware State Police
Fatal Accident Reconstruction Team investigated. Rescue 16 was back in Quarters by 06:0 0 Hrs. Great Job by all
members on scene of this incident.
On Monday, January 26, 2009 at 2230 hours, Station 16 and Station 14 with the Duty Crew were dispatched to an
MVC with a rollover on Kirkwood Hwy. at Hawthorne Ave. in Roselle. When 16-8(Chief Godek) went en-route, he
was advised that police were on scene reporting a subject trapped in the vehicle. 16-8 arrived and confirmed a vehicle
rolled over and a subject trapped. A-16 and Medic 7 arrived and A-16's EMT and a paramedic gained access to the
victim. The victim was found on his back with his right foot trapped between the emergency brake pedal and the interior
of the right front quarter panel. Rescue 14 and 14-3 arrived and the crews began preparing for extrication and stabilized
the vehicle. Rescue 16 and 16-5 arrived next. Rescue 16's crew was assigned to assist Rescue 14's crew with
extrication. 14-8C(Asst. Chief Pressley) was assigned as the extrication officer. 16-5's crew deployed a 2" handline
from Rescue 16 to protect the extrication. The victim's foot was extricated manually by EMS personnel inside the
vehicle. The patient was packaged and removed from the vehicle in 12 minutes. A-16 and Medic 7 transported the
victim to CER. Units were on scene for approx. 40 minutes.
Recent Incidents
On Saturday, January 31, 2008 at 1320 hours, Station 14(Cranston Heights), Ladder and Engine 2&21(Mill Creek),
and Engine 16(Elsmere), were dispatched to a residential fire at 2516 Alister Dr. in Faulkland Heights. Engine 16-5
arrived at 1326 hours and reported heavy smoke showing from the two-story single family dwelling. 16-5 established a
water supply from a hydrant at Elder Dr. and Alister Drive. 16-8(Chief Godek) arrived on scene at the same time as
16-5 and established "Cranston Heights Command"(20 members of the Cranston Heights Fire Co. were participating in
a charity event and as part of a common practice, neighboring Chief officers cover for each other at these times).
16-5's crew advanced a 2" handline into the structure in searchof the fire. 21-7 arrived next and the crew was
assigned to search and ventilate the second floor. 14-2 arrived and the crew deployed a second 2" handline inot the
structure. 14-Captain-1(Lt. Jon Sokira) was assigned to Division 1 and Deputy 21(Joe Stewart) was assigned to
Division 2. The crews from 16-5 and 14-2 located the fire on the first floor. The fire involved the Kitchen, dining and
living areas which included an addition on the "C" side of the structure as well as the original structure. The fire also
extended into the renovated, garage which had been used as a storage room. The fire was knocked down, however
there was extension into the walls and ceiling above the first floor. Extensive oeverhaul was performed with assistance
from Ladder 17, 21-6, Rescue 14, Rescue 16, and 23-5. 16-8 placed the incident under control after 55 minutes and
units remained in service for 3 hours. The residents were not at home when the fire started. The FMO is investigating
the cause of the fire which caused extensive fire damage to the first floor and smoke and heat damage to the second
floor.
